The New Shul Havruta Program
Havruta means partnership. Participants in The New Shul Havruta program will receive study materials, with an introduction and discussion questions, each Sunday by email (starting in October). During the week, participants will explore the material with a partner (in person, by phone, by Skype, or however you wish), while other partnerships throughout The New Shul community study and explore the same material. Participants can share questions and insights with the larger shul community via The New Shul Listserv. Those who would like to do their weekly study with a teacher on hand are invited to an open beit midrash on Sunday mornings, at the beginning of each new week of study, at which Rabbi Kanter or Rabbi Wasserman will be available. One Sunday night per month, at the end of each four-week cycle, all participants will come together at the shul for a shiur (lecture) by Rabbi Wasserman or Rabbi Kanter synthesizing the material from the four previous weeks.
The topic for this year, 5771, is the Shabbat Amidah. We will spend four weeks on each of the Amidah’s seven blessings, for a total of 28 weeks, with each monthly shiur pulling together the material from the four previous weeks.
The schedule is:
1st Blessing: Avot (Ancestors): Oct. 3-29. Concluding shiur Oct. 31. 2nd Blessing: G’vurot (Wonders): Oct. 31- Nov. 26. Concluding shiur Nov. 28. 3rd Blessing: K’dushah (The Holiness of God): Nov. 28 - Dec. 24. Concluding shiur Jan 2. 4th Blessing: K’dushat Hayom (The Holiness of Shabbat): Jan. 2-28. Concluding shiur Jan. 30. 5th Blessing: Avodah (Divine Service): Jan. 30 – Feb. 25. Concluding shiur Feb. 27. 6th Blessing: Hoda’ah (Thanksgiving): Feb. 27 – Mar. 25. Concluding shiur Mar. 27. 7th Blessing: Birkat Kohanim (Priestly Blessing/Peace): May 1-27. Concluding shiur May 29.
The shiurim will be on Sunday evenings at 7:00 pm, at the end of each four-week cycle. The open beit midrash will be on Sunday mornings, at the beginning of each new week of study, from 10:15 to 11 am.
